December 2026 in Brisbane and Queensland

December is the first calendar month of Queensland’s hot summer.

Queensland does not use daylight saving (summertime) which is arguably a good thing given the skin cancer rate. The whole state remains on Eastern Standard time all year round.

Year 10 and 12 students have finished school for the year, other students begin summer holidays in mid-December.

December’s events are dominated by Christmas and New Year celebrations.

12 December (Friday) 2026 – Last day of School Year for Brisbane and Qld schools (see AU school and public holidays)

24 December (Thursday) 2026 – Christmas Eve Public holiday from 6pm

25 December (Friday) 2026 – Christmas Day – Public Holiday.

26 December (Saturday) 2026 – Boxing Day

28 December (Monday) 2026 – Public Holiday for Boxing Day

National FrogID Week

FrogID Week, hosted by the Australian Museum, is Australia’s biggest frog count. Held in November each year, it’s when anyone with a smartphone can help record frog calls through the free FrogID app, and help better understand frogs and environmental health around the country. It aims to monitor frogs populations and distributions over time, helping us to understand how frogs and their ecosystems are responding to a changing planet. From croaks and barks, to whistles and bleats, every frog species makes a unique sound. Using the free FrogID app, you can record the frogs calling around you and help us count Australia’s frogs.
